Baylor Concert Band Concert 5/3/2009

Posted by GWAA Blogger on April 27, 2009

The Baylor University Concert Band will present its final program of the season, “Music of Celebration and Praise,” on Sunday, May 3, beginning at 3:00 p.m. in Jones Concert Hall, located within the Glennis McCrary Music Building.

This dynamic ensemble, 115 members strong, performs under the batons of Acting Associate Director of Bands Colin McKenzie and Visiting Assistant Director of Bands Rick Espinosa. Also appearing on the podium will be graduate conductor Patricia Crispino. Serving as master of ceremonies and commentator will be John Morris, Voice of the Baylor Bears.  This will be Colin McKenzie’s last concert at Baylor as he leaves in May to pursue doctoral study at Michigan State University.

Opening the program will be James Curnow’s Fanfare Prelude on the Italian Hymn. Mr. McKenzie will conduct.

Next, the Concert Band will be led by Ms. Crispino in a performance of Steven Rousse’s arrangement of the spiritual Swing Low, Sweet Chariot.

Mr. Espinosa will conduct Chorale and Shaker Dance by John Zdechlik.

When Mr. McKenzie returns to the podium, he will lead the band in David Holsinger’s On a Hymnsong of Philip Bliss and Henry Fillmore’s 1920 march Shoutin’ Liza Trombone.

Mr. Espinosa will conduct the Robert Cameron setting of Franz Biebl’s Ave Maria.

The program will conclude with Colin McKenzie conducting his own arrangement for band of the stirring Welsh hymn tune Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah.

This concert is free of charge and open to the public. For more information, call the Baylor University School of Music at 254-710-3991.

Thanks to everyone who came out to “GWAA Out to the Ball Game”!!!  Even though the Bears lost the game, it was still fun to go to a Baylor sporting event and mingle with fellow alums.  We had around twenty alumni at this event, and we had a blast!  After the game we all went to eat at Buffalo Wild Wings and commune some more with alums from various generations of BUGWB.  Hope to see everyone at our next event!!

Rachel Benke Harrell attended Baylor from 1998-2002, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Geography.  She then attended Texas State University (was Southwest Texas State) and received her Masters of Applied Geography.  While at Baylor, she was a member of BUGWB for all four years where she was a squad leader in the flute section. She is an alumnus of Tau Beta Sigma, and held several offices during her tenure in the organization. She loved helping the band out in every way possible.  On July 26, 2008, Rachel married Ryan Harrell and they now reside in Houston, Texas. Rachel assumed the office of Vice President of Membership in March 2009 after the current Vice President of Membership had to resign to do personal issues.  We are very excited to have added Rachel Harrell as the newest member of our team!!
